John Fassanella

In Memoriam

John Fassanella, my good friend and fellow member at International CC, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2005.

John’s attitude was among the best of anybody I have ever known. Throughout our friendship and especially during his battle with cancer, John’s positive attitude was absolutely inspiring. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing many of John’s friends and, to a person, we will all tell you John was one of the best people we have known.

I’m proud to have been part of John’s celebration after his hole-in-one at International CC a few years ago. It was a Sunday
afternoon and we helped him celebrate in the grill room at the club.

As my partner in an alternate shot match, John was also the architect of one of the best strategic plays I have ever witnessed. On the seventh hole at International CC, John was to play first from the tee and needed to hit a great shot to carry the lake on his drive. Rather than hit the shot, John instructed me to tee the ball up as I would like it teed and then promptly played an intentional whiff. Then, I hit the ball over the lake and we proceeded to win the hole. I’ve never heard of an alternate shot team playing an intentional whiff. This brilliantly creative strategy was a testament to John’s ability to see all the possibilities.

These are only a few of the many happy memories I have of John. We all miss John dearly and are proud to call him our friend.
